UK Parliament Members Condemn Israeli Interception of Gaza Aid Flotilla
(MENAFN) A group of UK Members of Parliament on Monday strongly denounced “in the strongest possible terms” Israel’s unlawful interception and boarding of an aid convoy headed for Gaza, calling on the British government to act “immediately.”
In a collective declaration, 11 MPs alongside one member of the House of Lords emphasized that the Global Sumud Flotilla is a non-violent civilian initiative transporting essential humanitarian supplies to a population in Gaza that is under siege and experiencing severe hunger and widespread destruction. The statement added: "The targeting of humanitarian vessels and civilians, including British nationals, is a grave violation of international law and an unacceptable act of aggression and piracy," it said.
The lawmakers further insisted: "The UK Government must intervene immediately to protect those onboard, secure their safe passage, and demand an end to all unlawful interference with humanitarian aid destined for Gaza."
The statement was endorsed by MPs Adnan Hussain, Iqbal Mohamed, Jeremy Corbyn, Shockat Adam, Richard Burgon, Ayoub Khan, John McDonnell, Imran Hussain, Graham Leadbitter, Simon Opher, Kim Johnson, and Lord John Hendy of the House of Lords.
Meanwhile, early on Monday, the Israeli navy commenced the seizure of vessels linked to the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters in the Mediterranean, detaining activists aboard the ships. According to the Israeli website Walla, approximately 100 activists had been taken into custody so far, with the interceptions occurring around 100 miles from Israel’s coastline.
