UK Lawmakers Urge Visa Initiative for Palestinians with British Relatives
(MENAFN) A significant group of British legislators urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday to swiftly implement a visa program enabling Palestinians in Gaza with relatives in the UK to find shelter in Britain.
The appeal, made by a diverse coalition of 67 parliamentarians from different political affiliations—comprising both Members of Parliament and peers from the House of Lords—was addressed to Prime Minister Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.
The lawmakers advocated for the launch of a "Gaza family scheme," a program they suggested should be structured similarly to the "Ukraine Family Scheme" established in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022.
As reported by a news agency, the legislators, in a unified letter, voiced their "grave concern at the immense suffering inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza," attributing the humanitarian crisis to Israel's blockades that have induced famine and unrelenting aerial assaults on the enclave’s inhabitants.
The letter further stated: "We write to express our grave concern at the immense suffering inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza. Israel’s shattering of the temporary ceasefire agreement, weaponization of starvation, intensifying campaign of bombardment and military assaults, and targeting of people accessing humanitarian aid, have created conditions of mass death and displacement."
Highlighting the scale of the devastation, the correspondence noted that since October 7, 2023, over 56,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli actions.
However, the authors emphasized that the actual number of casualties is likely "exponentially higher."
